Foz do Tua e a Linha do Tua

At the confluence of the River Tua with the Douro, Foz do Tua is one of the most evocative places in the whole region. It is here that the old Foz-Tua Station sits, the starting point of the legendary Tua Line, a narrow-gauge railway opened in 1887 that climbed the enclosed valley up to Mirandela and Bragança, hugging the riverbanks.

Closed to regular traffic, the line has left a legacy of tunnels, bridges and halts that today inspire projects to promote tourism and preserve railway heritage. The station is also a stop for the Douro Historic Train, which in the summer months brings a steam locomotive and wooden carriages here, in a much sought-after return to the past.

Surrounded by classified vineyard slopes, Foz do Tua brings together river, railway and landscape in a single setting, making it an excellent complement to a visit to the walkways.

Visiting tips

• Check the seasonal timetables for the Douro Historic Train well in advance
• Take the chance to observe the old bridges and tunnels of the Tua Line
• It is a great starting or finishing point for boat trips on the River Tua
• Combine it with a visit to Carrazeda de Ansiães, on the other side of the valley
