Favaios
The plateau of moscatel and the four-cornered bread
Few places capture the identity of the Trás-os-Montes Douro as well as Favaios, at around 650 metres above sea level. It is one of the country's rare villages where Moscatel do Douro is produced exclusively, a fortified wine with a floral aroma and balanced sweetness, made from the Moscatel Galego grape on the schist slopes that descend in terraces.
The Favaios Cooperative Winery, founded in 1952, is the town's great calling card and welcomes visitors for tastings of young and aged moscatel. The wine tradition here goes hand in hand with that of bread: the famous four-cornered Favaios bread is still baked by hand in several local bakeries.
To understand this dual vocation, it is well worth visiting the Bread and Wine Museum, housed in an eighteenth-century building, which vividly interprets the village's two greatest treasures.
